RE: Land Between the Lakes??

If you have a larger rig, consider Piney CG in the south (TN) end of LBL. We like it better - sites are less tight - and the loops not as tight either in most spots, so it's easier to get larger rigs in. Same deal as Hillman Ferry - reservations for only some sites (and not for the FHUs, I think). VERY nice CG.

RE: WY 191 or I15 to Grand Tetons?

Haven't driven the section between the Tetons and I-80, but others here have said it's fine. 2-lane of course, but decent. The road west from West Yellowstone to Ashton is fine too - have been there, some years ago, several times over.

RE: North Carolina to Wisconsin overnite spots.

If Fair Oaks is the dairy farm along I-65, there is a private CG not far north of there, on the exit to SR 10. Not sure of the name of it. I don't know if I'd say it's "nice" but it's convenient. Looks pretty crowded, lots of seasonals - not our cup of tea, but it might work for you. Check for Rensselaer (not sure of the spelling?) and towns around there.

RE: Do you have a name for your RV?

Not sure yet. TV is named Kodiak. TT is brand-new. I'm thinking that Moby might be appropriate. :)

RE: Central Va to Chicago area

I usually use US24 to cut over to US41. Good road, pretty rural. When you get up to US30 head west to 394 in Illinois. I go up 41 north of US30 because I have to, the best way home, but BIG traffic.
Even better - less stop & go traffic - is take Rte 10 from I-65 to US 41, head north on 41, and in 10 miles go left on SR 2. Stay on that road as it crosses the IL border, and eventually hooks to the north, becoming IL SR 1. Stay with it thru the growing town of Becher and it will become 394, a 4-lane. That will take you to I-80/294 west, and you can continue west on 80 as far as you need to. Watch the exit from 394 to 294/80 - it can be a little confusing, as it's an exit for both east & west on 80 (west will be the second part of that exit).
We've been using this "bypass" for years now (folks live in southern IN) and love it. It's 2-lane but a good road. Lots of trucks, but a good steady 40-55 mph (depends where you are on it - watch the speed limit signs) and a lot less hassle than the traffic on US 30. And WAY better than that I-65/80 connection!

RE: Who is camping over Memorial Day?

We'll be home. Planning some nights of camping during the week before Memorial Day! Too crowded for us around here on holidays.

RE: ? on new or used hybrid purchase

Amen on the popup. We had both - PUP first, then hybrid (HTT) and found the HTT was even a bit too much for our V6 SUV, rated to tow 5000#. Granted, we had a large HTT, but we don't have 3 kids either. They'll get much more space & bang for the buck with a PUP, and still be able to tow it with a minivan - and get decent gas mileage to boot. Once you start towing a full-height trailer (such as a hybrid), gas mileage plummets. Tough at $3/gal., harder still at $5/gal. :R Not to mention increased wear & tear on a vehicle not equipped to tow a hybrid in the first place.
Our dealer is selling our 3-year-old HTT for over $12K. Par for the course.

RE: Excellent Customer Service - CIPA Mirrors

Good to know! We passed ours along to a friend who bought her first PUP recently (we have towing mirrors as factory equipment on our new TV). Will let her know, in case she needs service on them.

RE: First pop up

DH guesses perhaps the jets might be rusted shut (or otherwise plugged). I'd also suggest checking to make sure you don't have a leak in the gas line that goes to the stove.
Good luck!

RE: "Tail Wagging Dog" Question

Dontcha just love those upper Midwest roads?? :M You might also see if an adjustment to your WD hitch helps soften those bumps. We feel them, but they're only annoying, not scary - depends on how your hitch is set up, at least in part.
I sure wish they would have used good ol' asphalt in many of those places...

RE: bugs in the upper pennisula

The later in July the better, generally. Mosquitos are always bad, but you should be used to that, being from IL. :) Black fly season I think is usually over by mid-July or so.

RE: Towing with minivan. Looking at SUV.

I agree with several on here, if you plan to stick with a PUP, go for a minivan. But do make sure it has the biggest tow package available for that model.

RE: how do you secure your awning

I think what Cox is referring to is tie-down straps. You can buy them specifically for awnings. They work well, but if it's stormy and VERY windy, I'd pull in the awning.

RE: NOAA Weather Radio

Are you changing channels, or does your radio automatically select the closest one? If not, that may be your problem. NOAA operates on 7 different frequencies, and each station is assigned a specific one of them.

RE: Janesville Wisconsin

A couple towns not far away have private CGs. RVparkreviews lists Hickory Hills in Edgerton and Hidden Valley RV Resort in Milton. Haven't been to either, reviews are spotty. There's also Lake Kegonsa SP a ways north of there, off I-90; no hookups but a pleasant park and has showers. If you're going to be there on a weeknight, shouldn't be a problem finding a site; weekends might be tough as this is a park with reservable campsites.

RE: Easiest route through Des Moines,IA?

Des Moines has a bona fide rush hour, just like other big cities, so expect some slow traffic at 7:30 AM. Haven't been through there in a while, so can't advise on the route. Hope someone from IA kicks in here!

RE: Central Va to Chicago area

Be aware that the Tri-State has construction yet again. They're widening some of the sections that weren't widened a few years ago. Worst is the north end, I think, which is past where you'll exit, but there still is some you'll run into.
